Sidewalk Film Festival’s 2023 lineup unveiled

Sidewalk Film Center + Cinema announced the lineup for the 25th Annual Sidewalk Film Festival, set for Aug. 21-27 in Downtown Birmingham’s Historic Theatre District, including opening and closing night films.

“We are really excited to celebrate 25 years of Sidewalk with our local community and our international community of filmmakers this August,” said Chloe Cook, Sidewalk Film Center + Cinema executive director, in a press release. “This year’s lineup is stellar and includes a little something for every audience, including a great look back at some of our favorite films from prior year Festivals.”

This year’s opening night film is “Art for Everybody,” a documentary directed by Miranda Yousef that chronicles the life of artist Thomas Kinkade through his daughters’ discovery of his unknown paintings.

Opening Night After Dark will feature a late-night screening of “Hello Dankness,” director Soda Jerk’s comprised entirely of film samples, following a neighborhood undergoing political changes from 2016 to 2021.

The closing night film is “It’s Only Life After All,” directed by Alexandria Bombach, which provides an intimate look into the lives of one of the most iconic folk-rock bands in America, The Indigo Girls.

Other films scheduled to screen at this year’s festival include “Past Lives,” “Parachute,” “Jasper Mall,” “Moonage Daydream,” “Don’t Die,” “You Hurt My Feelings” and more.

Screenings will take place at Sidewalk Film Center + Cinema, plus various locations across Birmingham including the Alabama Theatre, Lyric Theatre, BJCC Theatre, BJCC Forum Theater, First Church Birmingham, Alabama School of Fine Arts Dorothy Jemison Day Theatre, Black Box Theatre and Lecture Hall, Kress Building Ballroom as well as the Steiner Auditorium at the Birmingham Museum of Art

“We encourage everyone, whether they’ve been going to Sidewalk Film Festival all 25 years or if they are new to the fest, to come celebrate film in Birmingham with is August 21-27,” Cook said.
